Our Story
Gbenga didn’t ask for my name or contact, but unknown to me, he had noted my initials from my wig and gown bag. A few days later, determined as ever, he tracked me down on Twitter. I didn’t respond to his DM at first, but he didn’t give up! He also found me on Instagram and sent a message, and this time, I remembered him as “the guy who borrowed my pen” and finally replied.
From there, our friendship blossomed. We laughed and chatted constantly, and while Gbenga made his feelings clear, I kept him in the friend zone, convinced he was just another handsome guy playing games. He would often call me his “fake bestie” and say his greatest wish was to marry me, but I didn’t take it seriously. I left for the UK for my Master’s, while he remained in Nigeria, yet he continued to manifest his dreams of us being together. He would even comment on my family photos, calling my parents his “in-laws” (which I laughed off at the time).
In August 2023, we had a heart-to-heart conversation. He expressed, with all seriousness, his intention to marry me. While I was flattered, I reminded him I couldn’t handle a long-distance relationship and suggested that if we were both still single when I returned to Nigeria in March 2024, we could revisit the idea. During this period of absence, he never failed to check on me, especially on days when I needed it most. His presence felt like God’s way of reminding me that he was meant to be in my life.
Finally, I returned to Nigeria. Before I left, I prayed, telling God that if Gbenga messaged me the day I arrived, I’d know he was my husband. And as soon as I got home, there it was, Gbenga’s message. In that moment, I knew he was the one. We reconnected, and on November 9th, he proposed. With joy and certainty, I said yes to this incredible man who is thoughtful, intentional, and everything I had prayed for.
